Kine A week said “Brand new powerful ‘crooks fall out’ try peopled having a colourful assortment away from important and arresting letters, and these, skilfully manipulated by copywriter and you may movie director, permit the film so you can tread h2o effectively. It’s just into wind up which starts to break down, nevertheless slap-upwards finale rescues it on the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can smartly dialogued, it’ll have no higher issue from inside the life style down its incredibly unappealing term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin said “The film motions in the a quick pace, the fresh new conversation is slick and you will characterisations essentially effective. Richard Brody from the The fresh new Yorker noted “It terse and tight flick noir try according to the brand new romantic and you will top-notch issues of one’s term reputation, this new violent genius (played by Manhood Powell) trailing a sophisticated unlawful casino. The latest film’s blogger and you will director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess games, getting mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) has worked at gambling enterprise and you will old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled body gestures of love and you can threat, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may smartly assertive photo (as well as their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle an invisible vintage of style.” [ ten ]

Photograph has actions and you will suspense, and specific short matches from humor to incorporate preferences. Ace shows of the Manhood Powell, since a gaming domestic overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, given that a police inspector, plus in the rating . Whilst the spot observe a common pattern, the fresh new characterizations are fresh while the activities sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you will topical, preventing the sentimental, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera basics show up occasionally so you can intensify attention and you will temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing since the movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, unique publisher and you can user manufacturer, and helps with rendering it a silky production.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a question of seeing Mr. Powell experience their paces fashionably when you find yourself a giant shed out-of actors and you may performers provide your typical service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good little lady which brings forth brand new best in your and you can Ellen Received ‘s the easy and slinky vixen exactly who will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez was fatty while the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of ready journey because the a tired cops inspector just who fundamentally shuts happening. A great amount of taking and you can smoking is done by the all alarmed.” [ several ]
